A spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled release of flows from a dam or levee into a downstream area, typically being the river that was dammed. In the UK they may be known as overflow channels. Spillways release floods so that the water does not overtop and damage or even destroy the dam.
Why it is called the Bell Mouth, because it shapes just like a bell upside down. As you can see in the picture, it is the upper of the Bell Mouth structure when the water is not there.
It is very unique design, that was created to spill the water out of the dam. As you know, many dams has a narrow structure. Not enough to placing the usual spillways that just like a river flowing down from the top of the dam structures. So this design help that idea. The water can flow out from the dam, without taking too much space in the dam structure.
Where the water go? Of course, just like the other spillways, it comes out the other side of the dam.
